The charming City of Hart is located along the shores of the all-sport Hart Lake, just miles from Lake Michigan. Its historic downtown is an excellent place for shopping, eating, and entertainment. In addition, Hart is home to Michigan’s first rail-trail that spans 23 miles south, used year-round by bicyclists, snowmobilers, runners, and walkers.

2024 Sidewalk Replacements
The City of Hart is now accepting applications for residential sidewalk replacements within the City of Hart. Residents may voluntarily apply at Hart City Hall, at 407 S State Street, Hart, Michigan, 49420 until July 30, 2024.
Owners are responsible for paying in advance 60% of the full cost of their sidewalk project. The City of Hart will pay the remaining 40% in accordance with Chapter 1020 of the City Code. The 2024 replacement cost for a standard 4” sidewalk is $8.40 per square foot.
First come, first serve – the program will be managed on a “first come, first serve” basis. The city will place the applications on a list in order of receipt and prioritize replacement on a worst-first basis. Worst first” means that pedestrian safety issues will be considered over auxiliary issues. Pedestrian safety issues may include severely cracked, heaved, missing, spalled or crumbled sidewalks that is or could become a trip hazard. Cosmetic-only projects are not eligible for 60/40 funding.
Note - Root structures are a common cause of sidewalk damage. If a tree causing damage is in the right of way, the city will incur the cost of removing it. Trees on private property are the responsibility of the property owner.
Sidewalk Budget
Sidewalk projects will commence when sufficient sidewalk projects are accumulated to place a work order with the preferred contractor. Projects will continue until budgeted funds are depleted.

Discover John Gurney Park
Plan a stay or visit John Gurney Park and Campground, walking distance from downtown Hart, situated on a picturesque bluff that follows the eastern shoreline of Hart Lake. The campground offers sites ranging from rustic to full hookup, nightly to seasonal, a camp store, playground, boat lodge, bike rentals, activity pillion, a picnic arbor, and numerous outdoor sports amenities.

Historic District Village & Museum
Hart Historic District Museum and Village is located on the edge of Chippewa Creek just blocks from Downtown Hart. This village invites guests to tour the historical buildings and numerous old-time attractions throughout the museum that will take you on a journey 150 years into the past. Tour a restored 19th-century church, one-room schoolhouse, log cabin, Chief Cobmoosa’s house, Hart Train Station, an original grist, flour mill, and windmill. In the mill, watch the animated doll display in action. The church basement houses the extensive and unique “Seymour Rider Indian Artifacts Collection”, a must-see for antique Indian and history buffs. During the month of December, the Historic District is adorned with old-time streetscape holiday decorations.

Every Picture Tells a Story
The City of Hart is working with technicians from HydroCorp to perform a cross-connection inspection in all residential properties as required by the State of Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act. While Hydrocorp performs the cross-connection inspection, they will also install new reading devices and survey current water meters as part of a community wide replacement program. The goal of this program is to update the community's water meter infrastructure. This program will help to ensure continuing safety, accuracy, and functional operation of the water system.
Appointments for the cross-connection inspection MUST BE SCHEDULED through the approved third-party contractor, HydroCorp who specializes in communitywide installation programs. The HydroCorp technician will be identifiable with a company shirt and identification badge.
To schedule your appointment, please visit http://www.watermeterinstall.com or call HydroCorp at 800-315-4305 Mon-Fri 8 am-6 pm. Appointments are available Monday thru Thursday 8 am- 6 pm. Appointments are scheduled in two 4-hour windows, with a two-hour window in the 4 pm-6 pm segment to schedule your appointment.
The process of performing the cross-connection inspection, installing new reading devices and, if necessary, replacing the water meter typically takes less than 45 minutes and there are NO FEES FOR THE INSPECTION OR METER REPLACEMENT.

Discover the Hart-Montague Trail
Hart is proud to be known for the William Field Hart-Montague Trail State Park - the first paved rail-trail spanning 22 miles south to Montague, Michigan with picnic areas and scenic outlooks along the way. It is utilized year-round by outdoor and recreation enthusiasts.
The City of Hart marks the north end of the trail, providing easy access and plenty of amenities. The trail was once a Grand Rapids to Pentwater railroad line dating back to 1872.
